I just installed linux for my first time
i gave it a swap and a root partition
assuming i gotta have a partition for /usr, /home, ect...
how much space should i give for them if i have 10gigs?

It depends upon what you are going to do. Check out my multi-partition NHF HERE (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/installation/partition/multi_partition.html).

With 10GB, I'd do this:

/ - 1GB
/home - 3GB
/var - 500MB (or, if non-Debian, 200MB)
/tmp - 250MB
swap - 256MB
/usr - 5GB

But that's just me
