I getting ready to dual boot my main machine with slackware. I going to try out blackbox for the window manager. I want to try to get Quake3 and RTCW running through it. Is blackbox good for playing q3 or do I need to stick to another window manager??

blackbox or fluxbox are good choices as are any other light window manager. I have Tribes2, Unreal Tournament, Counter-Strike and Half-Life all working perfectly under Slackware with fluxbox and have no problems.

Its actually not the Window manager that determines wheter or not a game works, its dependant on wheter or not you have configured X properly. Some window managers have funky scripts to load some stuff, like sound, (as some wm's have shown not to)
So if it works in Gnome/KDE - then it will work in Flux/Blackbox.
PS: I'd suggest using Fluxbox over Blackbox, as Flux is being worked on far more frequently than Blackbox; and Fluxbox uses the same Blackbox code, and then some. Besides, Fluxbox sounds sooooooo much better than Blackbox, so its works better :D (oops, sorry... had a Windows-ism there  )

cheeky, could you please show refer me to any web pages that describe getting counter-strike and such to work perfectly...
i can get it to work in wine, but it won't connect to the multiplayer server.
thanks.

I followed the linux half-life howto on the http://lhl.linuxgames.com site and just used wineX instead of wine. The version of wineX I used can be found here (http://py2cmod.sourceforge.net/wineX-20011209.tar.bz2). The latest cvs when I compiled it had some problems with sound, but that was about a month ago now and I suspect will be fixed. Make sure when you are configuring wineX you use ./configure --enable-opengl.

i found Fluxbox to be rather useless really...
the thing i love about blackbox is it's minimalism. it's so lightweight, but still has all the right features.
fluxbox seems to make blackbox feel more like KDE or another huge desktop manager.
i'll stick to blackbox and add applications as i see the need for them...
