Ok. I got sick of SuSE so I'm switching to Debian. I'm downloading the ISO's.

I was wondering...What's on the 3rd cd? Is it sourcecode? And should I download it?

hey evul -

Just d/l the first ISO, it's more than likely the only one you'll need. As a matter of fact, if you've got a fast connection, just skip the ISO's altogether and just install via FTP, and then retrieve the rest of the system via apt-get over the network. You'll always have a fresh system that way, and you'll probably want woody on your system rather than potato anyway...

The third CD is made up of rarely used programs. The programs on the first CD are the commonly used programs, and the second CD is the programs that are slightly less common.

I doubt I can do an FTP installation since I have the lamest type of DSL. PPPoE. I need to use something like roaring penguin to basically 'dial up' to my ISP. Is there a way I can still install it?

I gotcha. I'm not aware of PPPoE capability being inherent to the Debian install, but my connection is static so I've not actually looked into it. I suppose if you were to compile a custom kernel with PPPoE support, created a custom bootdisk set with that kernel and with a utility disk as necessary (I'm not sure what PPPoE uses, dhcp, pump maybe???) to get an IP and gateway you could do it.

Best thing for now would most likely be to grab the install ISO and install from that. When you reboot the system after the initial 'base' install, use the CDROM as the apt-get source and once your system is up with PPPoE you can upgrade essential parts of the system as necessary over the net. Don't get me wrong, with the install ISO you'll have a *somewhat* current, completely stable linux system, but you won't an have absolutely up-to-date system as is most Debian users wont. You'll most likely want to upgrade some or all of the system to 'woody' and run X4.0.x, other goodies. Luck!

Ok, so I should just get the 1st ISO and update it after I install it?
