I'll be trying to install Slack 8 this evening when I get home from work... I'm currently using Mandrake 8, and I have used Mandrake for about a year now (starting with 7.02). Is there anything out of the ordinary I should know before trying to f-up my HDs? ;P I'm worried about 4 things: SMP, HighMem, ReiserFS, and all 3 drives are connected thru a Promise Ultra66 Controller... I'm definately no Linux guru. I've kinda browsed the install CD, and I'm just curious as to which boot disk to use - smp, or whatever else, or the slackreiser.i, etc...?
Where should I start, and what should I know going in?
TIA

Sounds like you're well on your way in Linux. The only thing about Slack is that it uses BSD init's... You won't likely find your initialization files in the same places, under the same directory structure as Red Hat/Mandrake. Some folks find BSD init's easier because the structure/location of the files seems less scattered than SysV init's (so it's easier to do manual configurations with Slack IMHO). I'm sure you'll find your way around just fine though.

Yep.. I just moved from Mandrake to Slackware 8 this morning... don't expect to find any fancy gui "fix it up for me so I don't have to" menu's! :)
I like it much better though already.... except that my rtl8139 doesn't work!!

Stop being a "Pinko" and submit to The One True "Bob" (http://www.subgenius.com).

That's just it - I, for the most part, know Mandrake... 8 is buggy as hell, I don't wanna go back to 7.2, I can't afford to try SuSE, and I don't know "SuSE" if I could... I don't wanna know distros - I wanna know Linux.
Anyone got any pointers on a boot disk that's got SMP, Ultra66, and ReiserFS from the get go? ;P

nope buy you can make yer own. just compile a kernel on your existing system with all the modules builtin and make yer own slack boot disk (see slackware.com for more info) the thing with mandrake and rh is they heavly modify their kernels with patches so you cant expect that from a default slack install. you gotta get the source and apply patches if you wanna keep some of the options you had in mdk. but thats the best way to learn

Before dumping drake; I'd recommend you take with you some config files...you know...stuff in /etc like /etc/profiles and some ~/.foobar files and .bashrc.
Nothing fancy but it'll save you some repetitive configuring.
And WELCOME TO SLACKWARE, You'll never look back!
