newbie just wondering whats the difference between the different guis?

and also is gimp only availible under gnome?

ntt.

Nope, you can run the gimp under any window manager.

Basically KDE is a bit more user friendly, has more things bundles with it, it's good to start with. Gnome loads a bit faster but i suppose is a little less intuitive. There is not a lot of difference. If you install them both, it's very easy to switch between them so you can see for yourself. You can always remove one later.

personnaly i would say use neither gnome or kde. but thats just me.
also it looks like gnome will get the business market for sure with these new deals with Sun (and old ones with Sun/HP). More will follow.
KDE will stay around on the home user front for awhile along with gnome. but i honestly dont think KDE will surpass Gnome for many reasons.
but thats all my opinion. feel free to have your own!

Out of the two - Gnome.

I think it's faster, and is a little more intuitive than KDE to me. There are some problems with it - it doesn't support anti-aliased fonts (but it will) and in order to edit the menus, you have to be root (why they do this completely baffles me). If you have a supported distro, Red Carpet makes maintaing and updating Gnome easy.

I actually just deleted KDE about 10 minutes ago :)

I have one word for you:

RedCarpet is dope.

Ximian Gnome on top of Gnome is pretty nice. Evolution is the best IMAP client out here. thought it crashes sometimes when using IMAP over SSL

I choose Gnome over KDE anyday.

Another Ximain Gnome user here, had Gnome 2 beta installed for a while and loved it...had to re-install and I am thinking of loading it again :)

If you use Gnome, be absolutly sure you get the new versions...the older versions (at least on Red Hat) had a nasty habit of crashing the panel
Gnome 1.4 - 2.0 do not have this problem and are very stable.

I was never impressed with KDE, but it does look like a nice interface. It's all personal opinion, what ever you like man :D

poetic5: just try both of them, EVERYONE will tell you something else. so just try them instead of starting another flame war...
if at least you said 'i need a wm/de with the following requirements: foo, bar, foobar' then you could've had a useful reply.

Ive only ever used KDE once, but that was enough for me to make up my mind. I hate KDE. I'm not a fan of lots of icons, boxes, menus and the such, and when I first started KDE it made my head spin. The pannel was stocked with icons. Click an icon, up pops up 20 more, go to a menu, another 20. I'm sure with a bit of tweaking it can be done to do what you want, but thats just my thoughts. Gnome is ok, very little iconage and menuage. But its still too much for me :D So between to the two - GNOME.

i prefer KDE just because it is the only window manager with sound for me.

Gnome and Enlightenment have sound too

also, kde isn't a windowmanager.
in fact, you can use icewm, E, sawfish, bb, fb,... as windowmanagers for kde too, although the default is kwin. as for the sound, i personally think it's annoying

True. A valid answer is going to be difficult
to produce for you, but here goes. KDE
is pretty slow, but looks real nice and is
also very simple to use/setup. I like gnome
more than kde, but don't use either one.
window maker! Like javacowboy said.
Oh, and gnome is slow too.

I thought Gnome was pretty fast.

Until I tried WindowMaker.

I was wrong :)

You must unlearn what you have learned, and use:

 WindowMaker

Don't worry, I haven't switched out of WindowMaker since this past Friday!

I use both Gnome and KDE. At work it tends to be Gnome, at home it is KDE. I like them both, although I gravitate more towards KDE. KDE is easier to configure on the fly, and is the better choice for new converts (of whom I deal with alot in my unending campaign to convert everyone in my work place). RedCarpet is dope, as someone pointed out. Gnome runs faster for me, as well. I just don't like the interface as much.

If Red Carpet had a larger selection of software and wasn't largely centered around Gnome packages, it could give apt-get a run for it's money.

KDE. That's right. Flame me! :)

I used to love KDE the first time I tried an old RedHat that moved away from text mode install. It resemebled Windows a lot and it made my life easier. Until the day I tried gnome with Mandrake, I've been a convert.

Even my professor prefers gnome. I see the trend is changing: it used to be Redhat ruled and the rest sucked and kde was the most popular.

I rather like this guy's take on KDE vs. Gnome:

---> Click here with your left mouse button and a new webpage will appear in the browser of your computer (http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=29022&threshold=-1&commentsort=0&tid=104&mode=thread&cid=3116874) <---

(yes, I know it was modded -1 Troll, but sometimes you have to lower your threshold to read the really good stuff)
