Ok, I just installed Slack 8. I have used KDE pretty much ever since I started using Linux and have really liked it. But I seem to really like Gnome 1.4 that came with Slack but I've never been able to get gnome configured as easy as KDE. I like shortcuts on my desktop and this was very easy to do in KDE but doesn't seem so straightforward in Gnome. So do you just need to crean symlinks on your Desktop and use those for shortcuts or is there another way? Also,I didn't have much luck with Gnome's ppp dialup software so I went back to kppp. Anyone else had much luck with it?? Thanks!

Shortcuts on the desktop: Open GMC, the file manager thingy, and drag out what you want. It creates a symlink from there, and has a properties tab from which you can set the icon, etc. Also, in Gnome, you can have several task bars, each with a "family" of apps that you use a lot, and each auto-hiding so as to not take up real estate. I have found that very useful. I can't help with the PPP issue, no modem here.

There is a catch involving Slack 8.0. The prebuilt GNOME packages (at least on mine) didn't have gmc built into mc (midnight commander). I was stuck using Nautilus or Konqueror until I DL'd the latest mc source, configured it --with-X, then built and installed it. Now I have gmc.
The drag and drop thing might work with Nautilus, but I can't say since I personally hate desktop icons. Aligned panels and drawers are my two favorite GNOME features.
