So, I was running SuSe 6.4 with Gnome, and I come home one day to find that my display won't come up. I tried rebooting, but when the system tries to start X, the display just blanks. I can't run SaX or anything else. I've tried booting into different VGA modes, but no dice. Has anyone encountered this? I really didn't do anything to the machine, and the graphics card seems fine. AARGH!

I had a problem where X kept respawning but wouldn't actually start so it started -- crashed -- respawned -- crashed ad nauseum

turns out it was caused by xfstt which couldn't connect to port 7101.

fraid I can't actually offer any real help with this one. I suggest you try XF86Setup and see if it can connect to the server if not then there is a serious problem.
also check your log files. in /var/log if X won't start properly then it should write a log file to tell you what went wrong.
