I just upgraded my kernel on my workstation yesterday from the RedHat 7 stock 2.2.16 to the newest 2.4.7 and what a difference it made, especially in video quality. I don't know what is in the new kernel that changed my system but the videos in Quake 3 run flawlessly for the first time since I've owned the game. Anybody know why this might be? Again for the first time I also get the same quality playing .MPG files. I'm now one step closer from making Linux my primary OS.

*blink*

I may have to get rid of my 2.2.17 kernel! Hrm, apt-get dist-upgrade.

that's really cool... did it do anything to your performance? faster? less pokey?

Yes on the performance. I am running Ximian Gnome with Nautilus and before it would take 20 seconds to change to any directory. Now it's only a second or two. Netscape 6 opens in half the time. The framerates in Quake III and Tuxracer are doubled. Life is good. Linux is great!!! :D :D :D :D

Cool! I've never really noticed a performance jump when upgrading from 2.2.x to 2.4.x.

The biggest improvement I've had is when I upgraded from X 3.3.6 to 4.x. Now that was an improvement and a half!
