most used progs

One thing that would really help linux is if there was a standard set of newbie progs, like WinAmp, or mIRC for Windows. So, lets start building such a list, what software do you guys recommand for these (please, only suggest graphical software that isn't KDE or Gnome dependant):
Movie player:
Sound Player:
Browser: (dont even bother, this will just cause a flame war)
Word processor:

thats all the software i can think of, here are my suggestions
Movie: no clue
Sound: xmms
Word: abiword

What good would this list be?

The not-so-clueful user will pretty much automatically use the GNOME/KDE apps, because it's easy.

The truly clueful user is educated enough to make their own decision and to install/configure their own apps.

But, if you want a list of preferred software for these things and that's it .. then this should go in off-topic
