Using Slackware 7.1, and when I try to upgrade to Sawfish 0.31 (using .tgz, following all the recommendations for updating rep-gtk and all that), it says it installs correctly, but then won't start. X loads, but none of my windows have any properties. Anyone?

I think I had about the same problem. I installed or updated sawfish, can't remember which. And then I started Gnome. The windows were there but there weren't any borders or buttons around it.
Then I opened the gnome control center and selected another theme for sawfish and for some reason that seemed to work.

Me, too, this is RedHat6.2, I upgraded from the helix-gnome thingy, and there were no window tops. Bummer. I STILL haven't fixed it, and now, it won't start at all, but falls over to Enlightenment. I would love to "back up" one but there are several libraries that upgraded at the same time, meaning that it's not going to be that simple. I've likely got to back all those up by one version number, and that's a real hassel. Anybody got a solution?
OH, changing themes didn't help mine, I tried it, no window tops.

First off, I have slack 7.0, X3.3, Enlight/Gnome.

One time I accidently closed/disabled Enlight and then all my windows had no tops/properties. It was stuck that way until I reopened Enlight on top of Gnome. You may be able to do the same with your setup... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Wish I could say it did work, but it hasn't so far. I've had to remove all the 0.30.1 files manually and reinstall 0.28 before things go back to normal... I'm stuck for ideas, frankly.

I tried to do that, too, I rpm -e sawfish and then re-installed .28. No go. The libs that upgraded along wiht sawfish stop it from working. What libs did you have to go back to, a list would really help. Thanks, Ray

I had the same problem, I think it was simply because they added/removed themes from the pack, and when you upgraded (as I did) they were gone, so no window tops to go on to. :\ I dunno what to say, just change themes and move on.

For rayjones: I'm also on RH6.2 and ran into a catch-22 with sawfish 31 (where gdk-pixbuf-0.8.0-5 wouldn't install because of a major release number > 3). If you are willing to go to an older version, install:
1) gdk-pixbuf-0.5.0-1rh61
2) librep-0.11.3 (probably need --force to replace version 10 - I did)
3) rep-gtk-0.9-1
4) rep-gtk-gnome-0.9-1
5) rep-gtk-libglade-0.9-1
6) sawfish-0.27.1-2
7) sawfish-gnome-0.27.1-2
8) sawfish-themer-0.27.1-2
I placed "exec sawfish &" and "exec gnome-session" as the only two lines in my local .Xclients file. I also changed the ~/.gnome/wm*/Config entry for Current, from Enlightenment to sawfish. BTW, I may have been able to use a new version of sawfish, but decided to work my way up from an older version first. Hope this helps. -matt, allofus@megapipe.net
