Hi there,

I recently installed RH 6.1 and it seems to work - except my mouse :-(
Until I get it fixed, could somebody please tell me the most used keyboard shortcuts for Gnome ?

Thanks in advance,
Simon

GNOME is a desktop, it doesn't handle the keyboard bindings. What window manager are you using? E, Sawfish, Blackbox?

That's a good question.
I chose to install a Gnome Workstation during installation - does that give you a hint ?

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I am a total newbie with regards to Linux.

I get to the graphical login prompt, enter username and password and then get to the "desktop" - but since my mouse doesn't work, I can't do anything there.
I would like to know how to activate the "Gnome" start-button in the lower left corner (like in MS Windows you use <ctrl-esc> for activating the Start-button).

Regards,
Simon

You can't hit any buttons to get the GNOME menu, GNOME isn't a window manager. I (we) need to know what window manager are you using before we can anwser this. Granted, running X is kinda useless withought a mouse, but Enlightenment does allow for key commands to replace the mouse movement (and action). Tell me, what does it LOOK like when you start X? Provide as much detail as possible.

try this... When you get to the login prompt, type <ctrl><alt><F2>...

This will put you at another login screen (the command line interface one)...

Before you have a heart attack, I'll walk you thru what we need to do...
Login as you....
Type (hitting <Enter> after each command: cd
vi .xinitrc
i INSERT should show up at the bottom of your screen
gpm -k (Enter not necessary here just make sure that this line is the first line of the file and on it's own line)
<ESC>
:wq
now exit, relogin as root and reboot....

When you login as yourself, your mouse should work in gnome...

Good luck...

Knute:
Thank you very much for your detailed help. I will try this when I get home from work today - and post the result here.

Thanks,
Simon

Hello again,

Okay, problem fixed. It turned out that my old 486 somehow didn't detect my mouse. I used a PS2 mouse with a PS2-->Serial adaptor, and that didn't work.
Now, I found an ooold serial mouse, and that works.

Thanks for your help - next time I hit a problem, I will definitely ask in here.

Regards,
Simon

regarding wm's, how can I bind a key to open up the menu? I've got a (gag!) ms keyboard with that windows key. I've got Gnome/Enlight, Slack 7.0, X3.3...
