Sensei
05-21-2001, 03:26 PM
I was flying back on a plane from Columbus Ohio this morning thinking, how am I going to do this? How am I going to explain that today is my last day working for Internet.com and running Linuxnewbie.org? Well I guess I just did.

Sensei's farewell (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/arigato.html)

Farewell friends...

PS my sensei@LNO email will be cutoff soon.

I'm so sad now! LNO is my favorite site, and the only one I visit on a daily basis. All you guys were so very helpful in making me the semi-guru I am today. I've had so much fun here!

Well, as Sensei said, the site'll stay up; the forums will stay active; All I have to say is, whoever takes over the site, If they ever need help, they just have to ask.

Well, Thanks Sensei, for all you've done. And good luck, and have fun.

I'll miss you sensei and linuxgirl. Thank you for this great site. I think it's the only website that offers friendly Linux help on the net. The site will definitely not be the same without you. *sniff*

I can only hope and pray that the site continues to roll forward, because it's taken much time to make it become the great and wonderful place it is.

I know I would be lost with linux if it weren't for this site, as well, I prolly would never have gotten back into programming, nor started up a site with a fellow LNOr.

I'm sad.

This is almost as much a shock to me as Douglas Adams.

But, I guess things have to change. It's the nature of human beings.

Okay, so who wants to start the next Gen LNO? I don't know about you guys, but the whole not knowing how he got fired doesn't ring too true with the general ideals of Linux...maybe it's time for some of us to get together and start a NEW LNO, free from corporate pigs and the like...I realize this has been tried before, but I don't think we were in danger before...

What happens if the all-powerful internet.com (like the have a right to that name) gods decide that the LNO forums are no longer worth their money? Anybody else agree with me on this? I was about a 2 months away from starting and enterprise Linux site with njcajun awhile ago but apparently that fell apart.

Anywho, I've got a hankerin to do some designin, and I thinks it's time that the LNOers took charge of their own destinies and started something that WE control, not some cold-blooded bastard of a company. What do you guys think?

I guess I better put my denial aside and say goodbye then.

It's really upsetting. I've been here since forever ago it seems, and Sensei was there all the while. I've had opportunity to correspond with him off the site, and he's been nothing but encouraging - true to the mission of the site at all times. The guy is a gem.

When I came here, I was lost. I had been aimlessly hacking around with Linux for 6 months, and this place dramatically improved my learning curve. Now, I'm a Linux/UNIX Systems Engineer and a 'posthumusly published' writer about Linux related 'stuff'. I would not have been able to do so much in such a short period of time without his efforts toward running this site both fairly and flawlessly.

I don't know the circumstances surrounding his leaving, but I hope that the result is that another door, previously unseen, has opened to bring you even bigger and better challenges.

...And I hope you make lotsa $$$$ doin' it, too! :)

Sad to see you go.

I can't explain it, but this announcement has moved me to the point of tears. Over the past year and a half, this site and its community have meant an incredible amount to me. Though I ventured out to other sites and bulletin boards, this is the only one I've come back too. The people and atmosphere here are amazing. To me, LNO has been a home, a place to go in boredom, frustration, sadness, and happiness. I've shared good times and bad with the people here, and I feel like something important will be lost with Sensei's departure.

I can't say I didn't see it coming. When LinuxGirl left, I knew things were on the way out.

Come to think of it, the above is a pretty good reason for being moved to tears. This place has been a place of warmth, security, learning, and growth, but like all good things, this too must come to an end.

Goodbye, Sensei, and Godspeed. I wish you well in the rest of your life.

<formal bow> Good bye Sensei. You will be greatly missed, that I am sure of. As it must be, we the linux newbies must master our world ourselves and move on, and teach newbies of our own.

You have my upmost respect, and I hope your real life is as good as it sounds. I may see you one day, as my plans seem fixed around florida lately. As they say in disneyland.. it's a small, small world.

I have no doubt that this site will continue it's course relativly unscathed, but you know how these things change... it will never be quite the same. We are linux users though, and are resilant. If this site dissapears, then another will grow from it's ashes.

...

Farewell, Sensei, thank you, thank you so much for all you have given.

Before sensei@LNO will be cutoff soon, I would like to say Good luck on everything you want to do to your self and to your family!! And before this site will also be cutoff (I hope not!) I want to say something even if nobody is interested on this, but you know when I start using linux I've ask for help on some of linux forums and linux irc channels but they're not as helpful as this community has, maybe Im just asking a very basic questions that those 3ll!73, linux guru would'nt mind or maybe it will just waste their time if they'll answer my question. But this site is very helpful it does'nt matter on the level of the question from the very basic to advance, this community will hand-in-hand in sharing their opinions. Hope this community and this kind of community will continue forever.

Sensei thank you very much for having this virtual community.

Sensei, I am deeply saddened by your and our loss. Your absence will be felt by all of us.

You have done one hell of a job with LNO and I'm sure you will easily land on your feet. I commend you for the work you have done in bringing your vision to fruition. This was surely no trivial effort and I hope the LNO community can hold together in your absence.

Good luck and may God be with you.

Sensei,

thanks for all the help and the best of luck to ya... Even though I am a BSD aficionado now, learning Linux with your site helped me to evolve and even get a better job.

I have this funny feeling LNO will either be:

(1) Dissolved
(2) Renamed
(3) Totally revamped

I know sometimes I gave ya a hard time about stuff needing to be updated and changed, but that being said... There's no reason why you can't start another Linux site!

Enjoy your vacation, you've earned it.

Hasta la vista...

All I can say is NO! I won't have this. I've ben posting here, talking here, helping others, being helped by others, and I owe everything I am to Sensei. This is all because of you Sensei. This just isn't LNO without you. I really could care less about some money hungry corporate .COM *******S! They are not in it for the love of the game. They are not in it for the people. We are talking about people here. Not numbers, nut fscking dollar signs. In a few months this group of scum-sucking corporate's will have their slimey banners everywhere, and who knows how long before they go under with the rest of the failure .COM's. Sooner or later, money runs out. And seeming as that is all that these corporates care about, things will never be the same. So I guess this isn't just Sensei's farewell, but I will also be stepping down from my part in this whole scheme. I have no more need to come here now. I would like to wish those of you that I have grown close to a happy life, and easy installations. ;) This is no place for LinuxNewbie's without the Sensei. Hope you all survive out there. Goodbye. :(

Good luck Sensei. Sorry to see you go. This is my favorite site on the net.

I don't think these dot com types "get" Linux. First, they dump Patrick Volkerding and Slackware, now this. They obviously don't know what they have here with LNO.

im terribly sad to see you go, i started my linux lifestyle with this site, and with all of the members which shared in my experiences...thank you sensei..i have learned more from your teachings than from any other. you have always been honest and fair...even with stiles during the election, which i will admit was tough....but thats what made lno great...its one of the last places on the net where people can have discussions about a variety of topics and not be put down for they're opinions....you will be missed...

Sensei,

I want to thank you for all you and your site have done. I can remember the days of Redhat 6.1 on my old pentium 200, fighting it out, and searching the forums here for the answers (which I found, thank you all). LNO has also been a site that has helped me get my job I've had for a year now with a webhosting company, and has helped me to help others out as well (mandrakeexpert.com).

Again, thank you so much for all the help and assistance, and thanks also to all that have posted such useful advice over the last year and a half. I really mean that.

How did this happen so quickly without me knowing? I feel robbed.

LNO has always been associated with Sensei (and LinuxGirl until she was forced out). It's hard to imagine it any other way. I can't imagine what LNO is like without Sensei. I don't want whoever that takes over your position to take the name Sensei. It wouldn't feel right. This site seemed to echo the type of person you are, always willing to help. You had given us our freedom when posting. In my mind, you had ranked higher than Linus himself because you had a personality we could see, where as Linux was just a distant figure that created something we all enjoyed. If there were anything we could do to keep you here, I would jump at it without a second thought.

I'll feel better if you help us keep up with you as to what you will be doing.

Remember when "TiredMnInNeedOf Sleep" alias "tminos" first showed up? If you can measure the accomplishments of the site by a single guy, this one brings tears to my eyes.

Thanks for bringing this site into being. I've got a bunch of books, but I've learned more from lurking, searching, and occasionally asking questions here than I could have understood from my late night reading.

Also, when I've been able to contribute a reply, it has often been by finally being able to relate a real-world situation to something I have read in those books, so I'm learning either way.

Best wishes to you both and I hope you have a mild Hurricane season. (I remember those pics)

I can't say I am really shocked, as I feared this day would come
when you announced that you were selling LNO. I wont repeat what has been said already as it goes without say, but I would like to comment on why I think this site is great. Just over two years ago, Sensei, you started this site with a goal in mind.
It was an idea to present Linux to new users in a friendly and understandable way and to help them with problems in a non-judgmental fashion. As the community grew, that piece of yourself that you imparted to this site, carried into the new members, to make this site a fun place where people could come and have questions answered, without being intimidated by more experienced users. Add to that, great NHF's, interesting articles, "Sensei's Log", and some very heated and interesting discussions in the forums, makes this place what it is and why we all love it.
Good lick and all the best.

Darn it, three and a half pages later and the punchline I was hoping for never came. :(

14 months ago I got fed up with Windows when it crashed 4 times in half an hour. I downloaded Corel (of all things) and stumbled in here looking for help getting it to recognize my network card. In addition to learning that you have to turn off Plug-N-Play, everything I have learned about Linux (and a huge portion of what I've learned about computers in general) has been a direct result of this site.

Of course, the community and the people that come here are a gigantic part of this place, but Sensei, you made it a place where the people wanted to come and the community had a chance to develop. Thank you for the gift and blessing this site has been, and best of luck in your future pursuits.

(And [i]if[/] you ever start a new site, I think linuxdojo.com would be a good name. :D)

This is, in all honesty, truly sad. I actually am emotional about this. This is one of the saddest internet-related moments ever.

I've been with this site for a long time, and I admit I left and lost hope when it started to grow large and loose some of the feel of the "old days." But I was always there, just browsing silently but I never left completely. I don't think I can. It's like a part of me now.

I don't like the whole internet.com thing... I didn't like it when it first happened. I do wish you two the best in life, and I owe you a large amount of thanks.

I may not have always been the most vocal or present member, but I've always been here... and always will. I would like to be kept abreast (if possible) if there are going to be any closings or transfers of the site. I do own my own business and am very comfortable with running large sites and the rest of the baggage that comes along with it... if it ever were to come to a full closing I would seriously consider buying/continuing this great site.
(I know it will probably be consumed by internet.com, but if/when the day comes they toss it aside, I would be more than willing to pick it up and dust it off.)

Again, thank you, and as I wipe a tear away... have to say goodbye.

The problem is this; the internet is too traceable. The only problem is that advertisers think ads are useless when they have all this click-through counting stuff, and log software and such. They want us to buy something every time we click-through, or they feel like they are wasting their ad money. Unfortunately, most of us (or maybe just me) don't shop like that; we see something we like, come back to the site again a few days later, maybe look at it again from work, maybe go home and talk to the wife about it, and buy it two weeks later. And since we know the site by then, and visit it by typing in a url, nobody gets credit for a click-through purchase. This is despite having found a site through originally seeing it on a banner.

Wow. I guess I'm not sure what to say. I've been away from Linux (well, computing in general) for awhile now. Call it a self imposed hiatus, if you like. But, upon returning, I find out that Sensei is gone? That's horrible news. I'm not sure what happened, and I can't seem to get any details from anybody on IRC, either. BTW Sensei, me and VVX are finally (un)Official #LNO irc chat monitors! We even have ops!!! :)

Honestly... I really feel bad about this. It seems rather strange to be emotional over an internet presence (or the removal of one) but, this is different. LNO is what STARTED me on Linux, as well as many other things. Since coming here, I have become the moderator of a linux forum @ www.helponthe.net (http://www.helponthe.net) which is just like LNO was WAY back when. Anyways, I almost feel a closer bond to Sensei, vvx, Alphageek, Sweede, tminos, and the like due to the realtime interaction w/ IRC. It's like losing a friend. I have too many fond memories of chatting with everyone, inc. Sensei...

You will be sorely missed, Jason. Best to you and the better 1/2. Hope that you will check in from time to time, or feel free to shoot me an email to say hi!

Best regards, my friend.

Hi --

There's been some speculation re: LNO -- mostly bad speculation -- and how internet.com plans on running the site. Since I'm the executive editor in charge of the site, I thought I'd put an end to the speculation.

First off, let me assure you that we are not looking at any changes to LNO. The site isn't going away, the BBS isn't going away, and the NHFs aren't going away. I'll be in contact shortly with the BBS moderators about continuing their work. In addition, I asked Jason to continue on as a participant in the BBS, and he declined.

Secondly, we recognize what a vital group of people encompasses the LNO audience, and we have no intention of changing the site. It may take a few days for us to get up to speed, as Sensei is a hard act to follow.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to address them to me directly at kreichard@internet.com.

I completely agree with LinuxGirl on this. Nobody can work for free if it's their source of income. Let's be real here. Most of us here comes to this site when we have time. Sometime I can't get here in a week or so. And I have no commitment here also. But Sensei must be here to take care of things. This little quote comes to mind.

Gardener: I've planted the fruits tree and all are good and well....

LandOwner: Well... I know you love your plants Gardener but I'm afraid that I don't have anything to pay you for it even though I make money selling those fruits.

Gardener: Are you firing me as a gardener?

LandOwner: I'm afraid so. But since you love so much of your plants, why don't you come here everyday and look after your plants. You don't actually have to do any work though. Just come here, look what I need to do and tell me and I will get someone to take care of you. So that I can continue to sell the fruits from these trees.

I mean.. Come on... I'm even amazed that they have the guts to ask Jason to continue to support this board in volunteer basic.... How do they sleep at night knowing this? Greedy bustards..

I mean I love this board as much as the next guy does. But this BBS is built around community of helping each others under the leadership of Sensei.... Without many of us here on the BBS, we wouldn't be this way. So I have the confidence that where ever we go, there would be a community around us.... We can do this ourselves and we don't need Internet.com and a stinky name..... Whatever we choose another name, with the same help from many of us here and the leadership of Sensei, we can built a new community without much trouble.... We don't need a stinky domain name...

And if I were Jason and someone asked me to do the volunteer work for something I did as a paid job, I'd tell them to fsck themselves...

After reading the posts here and the article at Linuxplanet, I'd say..... FSCK YOU .....

I remember when I used to frequent an automobile UBB called LS1.com. One day, the guy who made the website what it was, decided to leave. Well, a new guy came in saying "everythings going to be ok...nothing's goin to change...." very similiar to what I'm reading here. It then proceeded to go right down the crapper. Now, I, and almost all of the original members that made up the community, don't visit there anymore.

My take is this, you can't expect to fire the guy who made the website and community everything that it is, and expect there to be no backlash. The members of this site respect Sensei VERY much. I will not be surprised to see this site begin to degrade in the near future.

You just got rid of the heart-and-soul of this very community in the name of, I can only assume, the almighty dollar.

I can't wait to hear from the inevitable drone you replace Jason with to..oh, install UBB upgrades and lock the occasional controversial thread. I'm sure everyone will go on and get by.....but just remember that we reap what we sow Kevin.....

Don't take this the wrong way Mrs. Sensei, but relying on your man to be the breadwinner is not a smart way to go. More than 50% of marriages end in divorce, plus, what if Sensei went lame and was unable to work? I say, it's about time you women got off your rearends and contributed to the family income.

I think I've held back enough and now feel I must put in my two cents. First of all, I think internet.com was wrong in letting Jason go. Obviously, the young man is creative, compassionate and dedicated. I can't believe the idiots in charge let him go. I wish you well in your future endeavours, Sensei. I am certain you will come out on top, land on your two feet, and all those other metaphors that mean you will do OK.

Second, LNO is not just Sensei. LNO is a community. WE are LNO. Unless internet.com pulls the plug, LNO will continue to provide help for Linux newbies and evolve just as any other dominant species evolves. I think I've said enough.

Man, you got guts. You fire the guy then you try to butter up to him by saying he's a hard act to follow. Hypocrite. But hey, your job is safe and sound. No need to worry about the guy who developed the site to begin with. Buy it out from under him, then throw him into the unemployment line.

Get a life man. You took away his creation and you expect him to continue on as a volunteer? Get real...

Look, All this arguing about whats going on, what has gone on and what will go on is basicly pointless.

Up front, just let me say that I'm as sorry to see Sensei go as the rest of you are, just so you won't get the wrong idea about what I'm posting. I don't like the way internet.com acted in the past week or so.

First of all, I'm taking a guess that nothing you could say to the people at internet.com would let sensei have is job back.

Second, all the speculation about how the evil internet.com employees will change the site and rip its heart out and all that may not be true. Actualy, if this is the way people are going to act from now on, I would say the heart has already been ripped out and the body is just flopping around.

Come on people! What happend has happened! Stop complaing about somthing that can't be changed, at least easily.

Ok...I said it, and now theres one more thing I need to do:

hrmph, derango

so are you volunteering to take sensei's place?
you will get flamed very bad if you do
which is why sensei's old duties should be taken over by somebody that works for the company that owns the board

if any of the regulars were to volunteer, they would be ostracized by the rest and the split would still happen

i am not saying there is anything wrong with anybody answering newbie questions here, just that in this case, the heart is portable/transplantable, if you get my drift (http://www.linuxnewbieboard.org) ;)

<sigh> I was not volunteering to do anything.

I was just pointing out the pointlessness of arguing amoungst ourselves about whats going to happen and eventuly split the board through our arugments before anything we're talking about here actualy happens.

However, in hindsight, I probably should not have posted that...I prefer answering questions to getting into a debate. Ah well...whats done is done.

I don't think the full potential was ever realized from LNO yet. LNO still has the ability to be ALOT bigger, but alas...times are tougher now.

I'm still monitoring these Sensei/Jason is gone threads ;)

If some of you really feel your not being heard I suggest you contact someone instead or in conjunction to posting on this BBS. I'm not asking you to save me (i don't need saving :D), but if you feel like you're not being heard, by all means make em listen.

As you eluded to, this 4 fold rise in the devorce rate happened after the women's movement (60's). I'm not sure if your saing that the increase is because of idiot men, but that would be mostly unfounded (if it's devorce is the fault of both involved, then it would be half the men's fault, hell I don't know). The change is prob mostly because of a change in the attitudes and roles of the sexes. I do find it ironic that Linuxman is encouraging the women movement's independence and linking that to reducing the chance of divorce, a very odd viewpoint. Just for the record I'm all for anybody taking of themselves, but I do reconize that there are cost to changing roles in socity. Nuff about that...

Ever sence internet.com bought this site I wondered how long this arangement would last (Jason working as the administrator). I've been very apathetic about LNO sence the news of Sensei's depature, I just don't like the move. I some what suspect that internet.com wanted the administrator to also be a developer, which I think is somewhat of a short sighted view. I do know that most developers that I know don't have the people skills to administrate a public BBS of this size with the amount of diverse oppinions that abound. I've always had respect for Sensei cause of how he ran this place (regardless of what some have said about my view of Sensei in the past).

Good luck to your Sensei and Linux Girl, hopefully this will turn out to be an opportunity to move on to something better. I with you two the best.

I just e-mailed the CEO of internet.com... below is my message... I hope other people choose to e-mail too.
To Whom it May concern:

I am a visitor at linuxnewbie.org and have learned about the "involuntary" leaving of Jason "Sensei" Brietstein. I would like to inform internet.com that I do not agree with this move. I have seen posts at f----edcompany.com about recent financial trouble at internet.com "Rumor has it Internet.com just announced an "optional" work week, next week... the head of HR said the company's "excited" to offer employees the opportunity.
When: May 22 2001 04:02PM " "Rumor has it internet.com just dumped 50 employees. Anyone left?
When: May 17 2001 11:56AM".
I am sorry to hear of the financial troubles of the company, however, I feel that a site such as linuxnewbie.com does need fulltime attention from Jason, as he knows the site best. Jason also has a following at the site, a following that if the BBS is read shows that people will not be willing to volunteer, and several are willing to create a new site, just because internet.com has relieved Jason of his position. Also, many people are currently looking back and noticing that they still own the copyrights to much of the content of linuxnewbie.org they never gave up these copyrights, and many are starting to question if they should inform internet.com to remove their material from the site. I am sure that internet.com has thought this decision through and have chosen Jason carefully... I just thought that internet.com may be interested in what is being said... and I'm not sure if they are listening to what is being said so far... I strongly disagree with the decision made, and I hope internet.com realizes that this site is more of a community than most. Thank you for your time.
Jonathan French
I hope I didn't go too far... ;)

Hey Linuxman! It's probably not too late to say you're sorry. I think what happened is that you fell into the abyss of ignorance and landed mouth-first on both of your feet.

Carefully extract both feet (left one first, then the right one) so as not to break your dentures, then say:

"I'm very sorry for my misinformed, sexist comments. As a man of the new millennium, I ought to have known better than to echo the sentiments of men three generations ago who thought that a woman's place was in the home. I hope that I am forgiven."

By the way, women are now allowed to vote...(in Canada, anyway).

What I'm getting to, is that most of the successes I've had configuring and understanding Linux have come from LNO, and I hope that Sensei's absence doesn't change the only place I felt comfortable as a newbie :)

Thanks!
