Technically, I believe, that Perl code isn't illegal, as its not an "access control measure circumvention device". (I still fail to see what "access controls" have to do with copyright) It doesn't include any of the DVD codes that are needed to actually get the information.

the whole thing is nuts if you ask me
these corps have to start understanding that it is their own responsibility to protect their stuff with technology or a different business model
i am not advocating piracy or anything like that, i am just saying that anything that can be locked can be unlocked and these corps are naive, at best

Call me naieve but here are my thought on this. How many people are intersted and have the equipment to to COPY a dvd. I have a cdrw drive but my "The Cell" dvd wont fit on such a cd without severly degrading the video and audio capabilities. And if I must do that what is the point anyway of having a dvd if I am going to degrade the quailty. I think the whole encryption thing is nonsense. And because of this I can't seem to get in to work with linux (well I've gotten it to work but its not fluid. Constant audio out of sync, and the thing that really pisses me off is that I can't even use my freaking hardware dvd decoder (stigma real magic). I've emailled and requested them many time as they do have linux drivers of some of their products. Never once did I get a response. Oh well). Personally, I think that most of the people using DeCSS et al are using Linux and they are using it because its they only way they can't watch the freaking dvds they bought and have the legal right to watch. Phew, that feals better ;-)
Rock on.

So how is this perl code used anyways? I mean, exactly how to you run the script or whatever to decrypt a DVD?

The Latest Mac G4 733Mhz are supposed to have an option to ship with a DVD-R/CD-RW drive. This will allow you to burn a DVD. These kind of drives are available. The media is ~$20 a disk but.. the potential is there.

Also using MPEG-4 encoding MOST DVD's fit into 700MB

go to the link i put and see if there are instructions. i think typically you feed the file into STDIN and it spits it out to STDOUT, but i think it needs some key value (related to the dvd title?) to decrypt it. i could be completely wrong though, i'm just tellin what i think i've seen or heard other people write about that stuff; i don't even own any dvds yet.

Ok, I have this:
Typical usage is just: cat
/mnt/dvd/VOB_FILE_NAME | qrpff 153 2 8 105 225 | extract_mpeg2 |
mpeg2dec -
This is from the slashdot article. I think extract_mpeg2 is the perl script. Someone whoe can read the syntax correct me if I am wrong.
Oh, and pimpaholic *cough*where?*cough*

qrpff is the name of the perl script (you'll understand what the name means if you ROT13 it). It takes decryption keys as command arguments, reads from stdin, and writes to stdout. I'd assume that extract_mpeg2 is a program that pulls just the mpeg stream from the rest of the disc stuff (I don't know what else would be on there...extra audio tracks? subtitles? whatever).
