Hats off to Linus, Alan, and everyone else who worked on the development of this kernel. You guys have been under a lot of pressure by various fronts (*cough* trolls *cough*) to just rush it out the door, including accusations of vaporware from the "good folks" at a couple of computer magazines. I'm glad that it took this long, as I'm sure that the quality of the kernel reflects the long development period.
I'm personally going to wait a couple of releases before upgrading, at the very least until everything needed goes into Debian-testing.

Heres an email I got.
I'm not gonna play with 2.4 just yet.
As I was working through the kernel compile NHF, I began reading the
README that is distributed with the 2.4.0 source and saw that Linus says
not to compile in /usr/src while the NHF's direct me to /usr/src to
compile. The README says to compile in /home/me to avoid stale .o's and
such. What's the scoop? Is it kosher to compile in /usr/src or do the
NHF's need to be updated for newer kernels?
Interesting?

That was the other thing that worried me. All the other docs I've seen also say to put the kernel source under /usr/src/linux.

I compiled 2.4 under /usr/src and everything is working fine. Maybe I should RTFM more? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I've been using 2.4 + ReiserFS since May. No problems, except 2.4.0-test8 wouldn't work with my network card --- everything before and after that worked fine.
