The only real problem that we are facing here is time. Microsoft do have lots of time to test and check their products for exploits and bugs, but then again that consumes both a lot of time AND a lot of money, which again leads us to our next problem. Each time Microsoft finds a major bug, they stick it on a nice little cd and charge the consumer £99 for it. This is NOT a good thing. The average user runs a Microsoft OS, and wants to feel secure, so he feels the need to buy whatever they throw at him. It is here the superiority of open source projects really kick in. As soon as a coder finds a bug, he can patch it, upload it, and everyone and anyone can download it. This is of course also a time consuming process, and maybe not always the greatest, but it is an alternative.

that comment is stupid. Any bug that microsoft finds in their operating system is patched and made avialable for download.

using http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp
i found about 60 downloads for bug fixes, security updates.

from windows 95 to windows 98 came a lot of improvements such as FAT32 (which is vastly supiorer to FAT16), full USB, firewire support, the first really usable/stable Internet Explorer, a lot of networking improvements.
i dont see how those can be considered bug fixes.

windows 98-> windowsME might not be a huge change as windows 95->98 or windows 98-> W2k , but WinME is only ~50$ (US)

Windows 2000 is a totally different everything from Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0

people who think that going from windows 95 to windows 98 was a "bug fix" must either agree that moving from redhat 5.0 to 6.0 is a "bug fix" and nothing more, or retract that statement.

Seven months later.

For two months, Microsoft denies the problem exists.
For one month, Microsoft claims the problem is insignificant.
For one month, Microsoft blames the problem on the hardware vendors.
For three months, Microsoft "will be releasing a fix for the problem very soon."
After those seven months, Microsoft releases the fix, and calls it a "Service Pack" to avoid confessing that there was actually a problem with their software.

Geezus man... just another way of saying how screwed the Australian dollar is! We can buy the WinME _UPGRADE_ for AU$179. The full version is AU$249.

No THAT is f@cked up.

Win2K isn't completely differen't from WinNT. It's based on WinNT. In fact.. it's WinNT 5.0.

i attended the conference where they announced the change in name and why they are changing it.

w2k and NT have two different style of kernels and the amount of changes between the two promted for a move away from the NTx series.
