glibc question

I'm running drake 7.2 and I want to upgrade glibc from 2.1 to 2.2. Problem is that when I try to do this, I get a whole bunch of dependency problems (using rpm version). If I upgrade this package, will I break all the apps that need need files from 2.1 (specifically they say that libdb.so.3 is needed by a bunch of programs)

I am running RH7
I just had one program that needed one .so file when I upgraded.
I made a link to the upgraded file and the program worked fine.
