Posting for a friend who can't surf, and I dont' have the answers. Please email him directly (
) if you can, otherwise I'll cut and paste from here. TIA, Jim

Got NIC, Got Linux, boots no prob to desktop (KDE). Lost from here. Got NIC
driver (tulip.o?). I need to know EXACTLY how to install the NIC driver, and
then get on the 'net using a 4 port hub (single IP) to the @home network
(cablenet). Commands and how-to's are totally confusing. I can't even find
where to type in the commands I got. Terminal? huh? I know the majority of ins
and outs of Windows 9x, but here's where I put on the dunce cap. All the stuff
i've read so far assumes some sort of knowledge on how to change dirs, and
compile a kernel. Geez, I can compost a kernel or two after eating corn,
but...well, you get the idea. I still haven't got sound working (CMI8338 sound
card), haven't even tried to get to the floppy or CD-ROM yet, all I want to do
is SURF for starters!

What distro/version and ethernet card?

If the nic does in fact use the tulip module and the module has been compiled for the kernel version you/friend is using, then 'modprobe tulip' should work.

Some distros use netcfg or other commandline tools for configuring the network. KDE also has the KDE Control Center which has a section to setup ip addresses, dns servers and such.
