I am trying to install mandrake 7.1 on a second hard drive. When i get to the x configuration part though my monitor is not on the list. I have tried everything svga all the generics, all the other dells. It cant find a working mode...i dont think the problem is my video card either, its an intel 810 which mandrake recignized.

Maybe 7.2 would work? Do i need a cd burmer though?
i am so close but....

The monitor setup should not be that much of a show stopper, just pick one of the generic settings that's close to yours and then later you can edit XF86Config to put in the exact horizontal and vertical refresh rates for your monitor. You should be able to get those out of the manual or maybe listed on the monitor somewhere.

Don't be discouraged, most of the time the installers will not pickup the correct settings for X anyways. Xconfigurator will do a much better job, it will also let you choose the resolution and color depth too.

Just make sure that if you can't get X to setup to not select "boot into X windows" you can changed that later if you like by editing the /etc/inittab file

yeah, just choose a generic 800x600 monitor setting with a 30-70 (I think, I'm at work, so I can't check) and that should at least get you past the X check. Otherwise check your monitor's settings, it may need special configurations for it.
