...you install linux on a high end monitor with auto boot to XF86 login and bring it home to a crappy 15" and the refesh is too high? (ala Windows98's hold-the-F8-key-down-to-get-a-boot-menu trick) I can't log in until I can see the screen, the monitor just goes into powersave mode because the video card refresh output is too high for the monitor to handle. I could just re-install but that would be the easy way. I'd rather know how to *fix* the problem than just go around it and take the easy way out.

A forum search on runlevels should give you more than enough info that you need to fix the problem. If you use lilo to boot you should be able to boot to command line by typing linux 3 at the lilo prompt.

aha! thanks, I tried searching every FAQ I could find but I guess I was looking in the wrong sections.. I didn't know to look for "runlevels"
