I have installed linux on my PC but i cant make X to work.
It seems that my monitor and video card are not supported (yes im a poor guy ).
I would like to know if i still can use the GUI or if i will have to live with the old
and loved command line. ( please help me, i dont want the command line ).
I use a SiS 5595 (620) (the ones that apperar in the list when installing linux or running XCnfigurator are: 5597, 5598, 6326)
and my monitor is GoldStar StudioWorks 44m (in the list: LG StudioWorks 45i
LG StudioWorks 55i
LG StudioWorks 57i
LG StudioWorks 57m
LG StudioWorks 77i
LG StudioWorks 77m)
I would really appreciate some help.
PS: sorry about my english (i speak spanish)

Did you search XFree86.org to confirm if your card is supported or not? If not, then it's probably not likely that you can use X. What chipset does it use? Have you searched google.com/linux for your card?

I can't seem to see where you mention the distro/version you are using or for that matter, the version of X.
X -version will tell you what version.
As cheeky suggested, start with www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) to see which versions of X support your video card. Also search the web or Google for your monitor and model and I'm sure you will find the necessary specs you need to configure the monitor.
Post here again if you need help configuring or upgrading X. Cheeky will be glad to help. :)

I installed Linux 2.2.9 (Mandrake 6.0)
I'm not very sure about XWindow but the numbers i found were:
X11R6 Xfree86 3.3.3.1
I downloaded a driver for SiS620 chipset (thats my card) from SiS site and installed it
(as explained in the readme file: rpm -i --nodeps xsis.rpm ) but i dont know what to
next in order to use the drivers. Any ideas?

 You seriously should consider getting a more recent distribution than that.

If you hardware can support a newer distro, then I would take demian's advise and install something a little newer.
Try
rpm -ql xsis
to list the files in the rpm package and perhaps we can figure out what needs to be done.
Nothing at the SiS site at all to tell what needs to be done next?

OK I know I'm a bit outdated (just a little bit :) ) but it is
a long story (maybe some other time I will tell it).
I've an old PC (PII 333mhz 64 mg ram) and I don`t know if newer
distrubutions will work.
Now to the damn driver. I made a lot of experiments and finally
my KDE desktop loaded (i'm sooo happy), the thing is that it doesn`t
work with 800 x 600 but at least I managed to have 16 bbp.
If anyone has any ideas, I'll appreciate them.
And thanks everyone for your help.

A newer distro should run fine on the PII-333 though a little more memory would certainly help.
See if you can manually add the higher resolution to your XF86Config. I guess with X3.3, that file should reside in /etc.
That or use the config tools.
