I'm new to Linux and am trying to make an old Compaq machine into a Linux box. I had no trouble installing Linux and making a dual boot with Win98, but Mandrake's automatic hardware configuration tools don't even recognize that I have a sound card. The card is an Advance Logic ALS400 SoundBlaster Compatible (cheap PCI sound card). It's not listed as supported in Mandrake's hardware list. Do cards have to be supported to be recognized? What should I do?

I am not sure if the card has to be listed. I had problems with my ESS 1686 sound card. I had to run soundconfig from a terminal window to finally make the card work. The mandrake hardware configuration utility was no help.
Hope this helps you.

Agreed, the RedHat tool 'sndconfig' is the way to go(this should be on your system already). Make sure you run it as 'root' and that you are in Console mode and not GUI. I have never had any problems configuring with sndconfig from GUI but it warns you that it is not a good idea so there has to be a good reason.

Mandrake's utility is still a little rough around the edges.
