Kernel Configuration Issues

I'm very new to custom kernel compilation. I've managed to compile one, and included the latest patch for the ext3 filesystem. :cool:
But i still have a few unresolved issues. :confused:
For example, which option should i enable to be able to use the sendmail service? How about the NFStatd service as well? Whenever i boot into my custom kernel i get these as failed error messages.
ALong those lines, does anyone know of any websites that detail the options u should choose to get services such as these?
Last question, i'm so new....are they actually called services?

As far as I know, they haven't integrated sendmail into the Linux kernel (yet :) ). There is an option for NFS, look in the Filesystems section. If you're not doing it already, I would be configuring the kernel with 'make menuconfig' or 'make xconfig', as the 'make config' is a pain in the neck.
