I'm very new in the Linux world and need some quidance on installing new Linux software. For example, I downloaded a Linux-version of the Opera browser (rpm extension) that I want to install but I'm unclear on my next move. I think I rpm'd it correctly but I don't know how to create the link to it on my KDE desktop (question - does Linux software typically run on both Console and Desktop environments?). Could someone give me a short list of typical installation steps for this example? Thanks!

rpm -ivh /path/to/opera.rpm

That installs it. It will probably be on your kde menu. Want a desktop shortcut? Right click, pick new, application launcher (or whatever its called), call it opera, for teh command to execute put in opera, pick a icon, and you should be done.

Thanks! Sounds easy enough. I'll give it a whirl tonight.

this may seem very obvious, but just in case, you could also start it by basically, from what ur used in windows, going to your "start" menu, selecting 'run' and using 'opera' (no qoutes), and this would start it, or opening and xterm and using 'opera' should start it as well, .. well good luck and have fun with Linux ..

Here are 3 images that you can take a look at. The first image shows my KDE desktop in SuSE, what I want you to look at is on the bottom in the middle of the toolbar: Yeah where it says Run Command, you can put that on your tool bar.

SuSE Shot one (http://mymkiiisupra.com/JPEG/SuSE_One.jpg)

In the screen shot below I right mouse clicked on the tool bar and got the menu you see displayed. Where it says application launcher... click there. Then place your Run Command box where you want it. If you want to move an item right mouse click on the left of the item and select move click where you want it on the tool bar and done!

This screen shot shows some of the previous commands I have issued using my Run Command box. This saves having a terminal open plus it's easy to point click select run!

Gkrellm... (http://web.wt.net/~billw/gkrellm/gkrellm.html)

Easy to install and use. If you are running SuSE 7.3 or Mandrake 8.1 then they will have the Gkrellm rpm on the disk other wise go to the URL provided above and download, compile and run!
