Just wondering, I usually use the CDE in Solaris, but I have played with KDE in Redhat 6.2. However, it ran so slowly, I tried GNOME and it still was slow. I just ended up using some lightweight manager, which leads to my question: Is KDE2 faster than KDE? If so, what advantages does it offer over the lightweight managers like feeble. Thanks all.

As far as I can tell, kde2 is faster. But concerning which is better (ie which has advantages over the other), they all have certain advantages. I like using ice or blackbox, because I can still run kde programs out of them, but don't have a huge desktop making me wait for it to load. However, kde IS a nice desktop, and while it takes a bit to load, once it does it's very stable, comes with many good programs, and very versatile. However, I prefer low mem managers (instead of desktops) like ice (which I have been using most often recently) because I tend to run high memory programs, and don't want that memory being used by my desktop at the same time. Just makes things better for me. But it's up the you, really, which one you like most.

Blackbox=Gets Old Really Quick

I started with Blackbox, but alas, I needed my EyeCandy. So I went to Helix-Gnome, tried out KDE2 when it came out, got sick of the Crash Handler popping up and the lack of Panel Applets, and went back to Helix-Gnome, which has LOTS of good panel applets, such as stock-tickers, weather updates, email checkers, slashapp, mount utilities, etc. It's great!

Hmmm, interesting reading.

You see I used icebox and I liked the speed there and the low RAM usage. Now I use KDE2, it uses more RAM but I really do not have issues with speed on a K6-III/450 128 MB machine. I guess it depends on what machine you have. On top of that I didn't even optimize KDE2 yet, just installed the x386 rpm version.

KDE2 IS very nice, the first time a UNIX desktop clearly better than a windows GUI.

You might want to look at www.xfce.org (http://www.xfce.org)
It is very fast and in many ways a CDE clone
