This is, I think, a fairly basic question, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a Linux newbie.
I installed the latest Debian distro, and alas the bundled version of X did not support my GeForce2 MX, so I downloaded XFree86 4.1.0, which claims to support it. I screwed that X install up as well, but my main problem now is that when I startup (the OS, not X), the system hangs while starting the Font Server. How can I a) make it skip this step while starting up, and b) get that item OUT of my startup routine?

Thanks.

to skip that step at boot you can hit "i" at the beginning of boot to enter interactive mode.

you don't want to remove it from the startup, you want to fix X, because if you remove it you'll probably regret it later.
