yeah,so i'm feel satisfied. I finally got LM8.0 running nearly optimal. I got my NVidia drivers werking, and UT is smoking at 1024!! as good if not better than in winblowz :) I think i might even go buy tribes 2 now. lol

but...there is one...maybe 2 things more i want.

1- *older* (not really that old) versions of linux, drake i presume, came witht he matrix code screensaver by default. But not anymore...anyone know where i can get one?

2- this is kinda older...way back in the day, when my best friend first showed my RH6 he had this weird little app that he ran from an xterm that would cause snow flakes to fall at the back of the desktop...and the flakes would accumulate at the top of the windows and when you moved the window all the snow would fall. it was REALLY cool, and was probably the killerAPP for me to start screwing with linux. well, since then we've both forgotten both the name and the precise distro it was. does anyone have any tips?

3- anyone try tribes 2, for linux or even winblows?

Not a helpful post but...

Like a falcon, you don't really OWN linux... it allows you to use it for those purposes it was intended for.

Anyway, I got the Matrix screen saver with RH 7.1. Not sure if it was in the default setup or if it was in the Power Tools but I know that I have it.

Has anyone counted the number of screen savers that came with each distribution. I am curious.

I've tried Tribes 2 for windows. I wasn't very impressed. I would much rather play counter strike. I found the controls to be difficult and kept getting error messages throughout the game causing me to restart it.

putch, slackware was the first distro i ran and i like it a lot. i switched to red hat for about a month and then switched back to slack. its a lot more hands on then redhat or mandrake(from what i hear) are and will teach you a lot more.

Try Slackware on an older computer or a seperate, small partition. Don't worry about screwing stuff up, so just do a minimal install. Believe me, I learned so much in just one day by installing Slack on a 500MB hard drive. What helps a lot is having another computer on at the same time to look up tutorials on the net. It's great :D
