Well, I've taken the plunge and installed Slack on my old laptop. It's REAL old, but Slack runs great on it. My question is, will XFree86 version 3.3.6 work with Slackware 8.0? I can't run 4.1.0, since it no longer supports my graphics card, and the only resolution I can get it to work at is 320 x 200. That's kind of tough to use on a 10.3" screen. XFree86 3.3.6 supports my hardware, but the latest version of Slack mentioned in the docs is 7.0. Has anybody tried this? Any other ideas?

Dunno if that's you, Samarth.
Read this: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=014410

Slack 7.0 has XFree version 3.3.5 so use the '/x' directories from Slack 7.1 which contain 3.3.6

Like I said there: remove all X4.1.0 packages with 'pkgtool' or 'removepkg <packagename>.tgz' and then install the Slack 7.1-provided X3.3.6 packages.
That's what my laptop uses @ 800x600

OOPS, I didn't see that other post, I wasn't looking for installation help, just X. Guess I shoulda looked harder. Anyhow, no this isn't Samarth, but it's one heck of a coincidence, with the Pennsylvania thing. My laptop is even older than his, it's an AST 900N, 486/50 with the WD/Paradise 9024 video chip. Thanks for the pointer!

I also type too slow, you posted another reply in there while I was answering. linux-laptops.net wasn't much help, I found some info there about lots of newer laptops, but very little about mine. I'm a former Mandrake user, and am making the jump to slack. I'm not M$ free yet, but working on it!
