Ok.
I have just tried to install LM8.0, but it dies immediately. It welcomes me, and then gives me this error:
"<Could not uncompress second stage ramdisk>
<I cannot recover>
<Please reboot your system>"
I have tried a CD boot, a floppy boot and booting from my CD-RW and then from my DVD-ROM.
Has anyone seen this? I suspect it could just be a less than optimal burn on my RW or perhaps a bad d/l of the ISO initially-- but, it'd be nice for some help.
And I did check around the site, before asking.
Thanks.

I've never heard of this. I didn't install off a Cd, though.
If you have two HD's, I'd really advise installing the way I did... instead of downloading the ISO's, download all the actual files themselves, and put them on the drive that you don't want to install linux to. Then use Rawrite to make the bootdisk (using hd.img), and boot from the floppy, then install via HD.

ive had this problem, but it was from a dodgy burn of an iso
could explain your problem, and or dodgy hd but that i am not sure about

Thanks guys. I've tried a few ways to burn it to no avail.
So, I uninstalled EZ CD Creator and tried Nero and that did not help. Then I reinstalled EZ CD Creator and burned another copy--
Now, my BIOS won't recognize the CD as boot disk, so, I fiddled around and re-burned it.
I am gonna try now- Linux looks really neat.
I can't wait to try it out!

Man. I dunno what's going on.
I got a little bit further in the install, but no go.
I already have the files on a CD, could I copy them from the CD to the HD (the one I don't want Linux on) and do it that way?

It could be a bad download. Did you do a md5sum against the iso?

Well, I re-downloaded the first Mandrake ISO from a different server.
Boy, have I learned a lot:
1) Burn with a high-speed rated CD-R
2) Turn off auto notification on burner
3) D/L from differing sites
4) Make sure Disconnect is enabled
So, I got part way through my install, and it asked for my 2nd ISO, which was burned the old way. The install had problems, so, I stopped the install and re-d/l'd the 2nd.
Then I d/l'ed the Mandrake Freq ISOs. Will burn them when I get home. Then I will re-run install.
One more question-- about Linux gaming.
I know some games are ported, like Tribes2 by LokiGames. So, I understand that you'd have to buy that. But how about for UT and Q3A?? I have not seen any ports for Linux- I've looked online.
But, I do see Linux patches for them at http://www.fileplanet.com. Does this mean, you patch the Windows version to use in Linux?
Much thanks.

FYI, you do not need to burn them to CD before installing. You could install from the HD just as easily, and possibly save some headaches. The installer (hd.img) will automatically uncompress and install using the .iso's
