What FLAVOR?!?

I am pretty new to linux, I want to learn to use *nix commands and shells and really dont care about the X desktop thing. anyone have any suggestions as to which flavor of linux i should get? also would be helpfull if you could point me to a place were the diffrencees between flavors is explained. thanks
