OK, here is my thing, I have a toshiba 805-S402 laptop with a Hitachi integrated sound card. I got it installed with ALSA and everything is fine as long as I use it as soon as I log in KDE. If I play MP3 as one of the first thing I do and keep the KDE media player open, the sound will work just fine..

But I don't do that, well...the sound kinda dies by itself somewhere between then and now.

I think KDE is killing my sound because if I restart X, the sound is back. I have tried to not start the artxx(something) server to no avail.

I would like my sound to work all the time.

Thanks.

That's a strange one. I would suggest you search through the bug reports at www.kde.org (http://www.kde.org)

in kde 2.2 artsd has a timeout function .. .that is it will *supposedly* idle out ... it is possible that this is happening.. (its on the same panel of artsd config as the start server at startup) ... and the server is not restarting properly .. dunno why, mine never idles out properly (Xmms can never grab /dev/dsp after the fact) -- personally, if I could get everything to work with esd I would use that instead...

Guess what...
It mutes the sound after a while. I didn't realize that until today!!!

That's a bummer, I need to find where the mute setting is and remove it.

that's funny...

Hummm...

Thanks guys, the sound still works it's just muted.
