Which ICQ are you using? Are you behind a firewall? Are you using NAT or IP Masquarading?

I'm trying kxicq and licq in KDE.
I'm connected via an network (crossover) cablle to a Win98 box (internet connection sharing) i guess it's an IP thing, not sure about that..
LICQ (http://ww.licq.org) seems to be able to snake it's way through firewalls pretty easily. You might give that a try, if it's not what you're using already. If so, be a little more verbose. What errors is it giving exactly?

If i open the network window it says:
Requesting Logon (#968)...
Resolving icq.mirabillis.com...
ICQ server found at 205.188.153.110:4000.
Creating local server
Opening socket to server
Timed out after 10 seconds retry 1 of 6
Timed out after 10 seconds retry 2 of 6
Timed out after 10 seconds retry 3 of 6
Timed out (#968)
Looks like it's timing out trying to connect to miribalis, but it knows where miribalis is. I'm guessing the Win98 box isn't forwarding the port that icq uses (4000). I've never had the displeasure of playing with Win98's ICS, but I did have the chance to play with one called "PPPShar" (yes, that's spelled right) from a small software company in India. I had ICS working in 5 minutes, with ICQ and SSL and all working perfectly from the other box. The URL is http://www.pppindia.com/intl/pppshar/ If Win98's ICS is as buggy and bloated as the rest of Win98, I imagine this will make your life much easier.

using RH6.1 thru a Win98 box I had to run icq on the gateway box to get it to work. Same went for irc. Now I've got Debian through a Win2k Pro gateway and it works. Win98 connection sharing didn't work well for me...win2000 works fine...if you have to do it that way. Much better to have a linux box set up as a firewall/router.

Now i have a dumd question....
I'm dual booting this machine Win98SE?Mandrake 7.1 i'm using the same internet connection for the both of them (sharing an DSL modem from another computer). In windows IE and icq and even napster work fine, but in linux only Netscape works, why doesn't (L)ICQ not work then ?

Hmm... good question. Perhaps you should look at what port ICQ is using under Winhoze, if possible. I beleive you can do this by going to a dos prompt and typing "netstat". Make sure that it's using the same port in LICQ.
Oh, btw, unrelated note, can I get a copy of your /etc/rc.d/rc.local? I've managed to blow mine to tiny smitherines by having Netscape Aggrivator lock my box up while I was editing it! TIA!

What do you want to know about the /etc/rc.d/rc.local ?
I type it in in a console and tell you what it says or ?

linuxpenguin, i have the same problem, the file u need to edit for Licq is in /root/~licq/licq.conf or similiar
change the server to icq.mirabilis.com to whatever icq in windows is using, i changed mine to login.icq.com:5190
but i still cant get it to work :-(
my progression to linux is almost complete, just licq and voodoo5 and then windows is gone!

I'm having the same problem.
[UDP] Requesting logon (#4602)
[UDP] resolving icq.mirabilis.com...
[UDP] ICQ server found at 205.188.153.111:4545
[UDP] creating local server.
[UDP] Opening socket to server.
[WRN] Timed out after 10 seconds 9#11224), retry 1 of 6
it then tries all 6 times, then
[WRN] Timed out (#11224)
so it can connect to the server, but it can't open the socket.
HELP
