i installed mandrake 6.5 (6.1, 6.0?) and when i booted it up, CLI ran fine, but when i started X, it ran fine, but there were no legible letters... all text was replaced with a black bar and my cursor was a big white square... some text was legible like 'logout' and 'emacs', but that's it...
what is wrong and how can i remedy it?

I don't really know. Maybe check the 'font' section of /etc/XF86Config to see if the font paths are correct. Perhaps change the order of the fonts. Ensure they are all there?

check your font paths, in /etc/XF86Config or in /etc/X11R6/XF86Config (all I know for sure is slackware keeps it in /etc/) but if you have troubles finding it you can always use
'find /etc/ -name XF86Config'
then if your font paths are ok...you can always try installing truetype fonts, and linuxnewbie has an NHF for this ...seemed to work for me, so I hope this helps out a bit
