Installing Packages, PLS HELP!!!!!

I am trying to install several programs that i have downloaded fron tucows, and i'm not having much success.

Ok, they have the file ext. tar.gz and they open up with the archiver, What do I do next?

I've been tryin' to wing this on my own, but I,m out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appriciated!

By the way, Are there any good sites that outline Linux fundamentals for X-win users?

The tar gzips have to be expanded, resulting in source code, which then has to be compiled, and there is many a pitfall in doing this unless you are pretty experienced. Try using some .rpm's, first, if your distro supports that.
