trouble pinging gateway machine IP help

ok i have three computers
gateway is win2k pro
other 98se
third mandrake 8

the mandrake machine can ping both other computers using the 192.x.x.x IP but cannot ping the proxy server IP that has been set up on the 2k machine using analog x...

i can not ping by name also...for example i can not ping 2k machine by name...

am i setting something up wrong?

the 98se machine goes through the proxy server and it works just fine...plus the 98se machine can ping the proxy IP...

why cant i ping the proxy server???

If you want to ping the other machines by name you have to edit your /etc/hosts file.
It should look something like this:

/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 win2kbox
192.168.0.2 win98se
192.168.0.3 mandrake
