Hi all,

Am totally new to Mandrake 8.0  and have set asside a third HD in my machine (1.6 GB Seconary Slave in a P166 48Mb memory box with MT, win2000 and Win95 for good measure on other drives)

My problem is that to preserve my old MBR, I installed GRUB to fd0 of a boot disk. LILO didn't want to work at all giving L 06 06 80.... or L 01 01.... errors immediatly.

I can boot the system once using the boot disk, but after a re-boot, I get nothing but GRUB Read Error. If I run the install CD again - yet insall / change nothing - it suddenly boots again from the floppy with success.

I am new so if I've not given enough info, just ask. I'm freaked that just putting in the CD, going to rescue, do nothing and reboot fixes the problem!

Regards

Daniel

PS I already love Linux despite enjoying 5 hours of the install / re-install.

I may be wrong, but I thought I've read that Linux cannot be installed or booted from a third hardrive.

It may be possible if you install Grub in the mbr.

You could try a Google search ( www.google.com/linux (http://www.google.com/linux) ) for ??? Linux on 3rd drive or variations of that search criteria.

I suspect that may be the case. I presume the errors I received from LILO were the same read errors but much less descriptive.

I will remove my other drives and try an Linux only install. My old installs of Windows should remain perfectly safe (next to the industrial magnet I keep for no good reason).

Everywhere I read of such problems, they say use a boot disk to start the system. I never get that far except with the CD-ROM. I will continue searching / purchase much newer machine if I get no further.

Thank you for your swift response.

Please don't take my word on that, though I do think it's true.

Try it like you said and post back with the results.

BTW. It wasnt' that swift of a response as I didn't see your post until I arrived home from work. No LNO at the office as I figure I'm not being paid to support Linuxnewbie while at work.

And always a pleasure to 'attempt' to help someone from my place of birth. Been many years though. And don't ask...

Please don't laugh but I support US users of our software from here in the UK. I work until 01:00am helping those on the west coast.

I know way too much about Windows NT, Access and Exchange, I'm really enjoying the challange of getting my Mandrake up and running.

...BTW, I _can_ boot from the floppy once. It does seem to work without the CD, I suspect GUI thing is changing boot options? Could this be why.

PS London is sunny but getting colder.
