My question is after I login to the dos prompt what do I type to get to the graphic interface that linux has to offer?? Mikenell 11-26-2000, 03:27 PM Well its not a dos prompt because its linux and not dos but try typing: startx If that gives an error type: XF86Setup (Case sensetive) And configure it from in there and if you configure it properly then sace it and type: startx Mikenell fuzzy 11-26-2000, 03:27 PM Uh, what distro are you using? I don't know what linux 6.5 is. Suse? Libranet? Slackware? Anyway, at the CLI (command-line interface... please don't call it a dos prompt. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif ) Anyway, that command would be startx If it crashes, then come on back and we'll help you through the configuration of the xserver. Good luck! ------------------ Politicians have one thing in common with baby diapers... They both need to be changed regularly for the same reason. --Anon. fuzzy 11-26-2000, 03:28 PM Ooh Mikenell! You beat me to the punch! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif Are you still using Slack or have any more luck with Debian? ------------------ Politicians have one thing in common with baby diapers... [This message has been edited by fuzzy (edited 26 November 2000).] StarWeaver 11-26-2000, 03:32 PM 'startx' should start it up for you, 'startx -- -bpp 8/16/24/32' seems to be the most common switch, changes the color depth. ctrl-alt+keypad+/- will change the resolution afetr it start, incase you end up looking at a little window of a big desktop. ctral-alt-backspace should abort the X server and dump you back to the command line. Oh, and there isn't really a 'linux 6.5'... most of the time you need to use the company's name or the name they give to their version of linux. IE 'Redhat 6.2' 'Slackware 7.1' 'Debian 2.9' etc :) -Ronin Angel StarWeaver [Edit: Wow three posts in the 3 minutes or so it took to write that :] [This message has been edited by StarWeaver (edited 26 November 2000).] tommyland 11-26-2000, 04:06 PM Yup Crashed after I typed startx, then I hit altf4 and gave a whole list of stuff(Xconnection) armando86 11-26-2000, 04:14 PM Type Xconfigurator as root to set up the X window system (Linux's GUI). Also to those of you who were wondering about his distro its Mandrake 6.x, I know because I had the exact same distro,it's a weird Macmillian mandrake clone. Here's (http://www.macmillansoftware.com/detail_software.cfm?item=1575953501)the link. ------------------ majorpayne201@yahoo.com "In a world without walls who needs windows?" Mikenell 11-26-2000, 07:51 PM Well I installed Slack yesterday to check out BlackBox. I'm gonna get Debian going and upgraded to woody next weekend. I prefer Debian, and I'm putting blackbox on it too. hehe. Mikenell vvx 11-26-2000, 07:54 PM Whenever you hear Linux 6.5, it's near always Macmillian Mandrake 6.1 (which they named 6.5..) fuzzy 11-27-2000, 09:25 AM Originally posted by Mikenell: Well I installed Slack yesterday to check out BlackBox. So much nicer than the cluttered gnome/kde. ------------------ Politicians have one thing in common with baby diapers...
