Well, pine is supposed to be _the_ text-based mail client for IMAP, especially since one of the core developers of IMAP works at UW, if I'm not mistaken. One of the reasons that it's taken so long to get any kind of threading at all on Pine is that IMAP didn't properly support threads yet, therefore pine didn't support threads. Kinda joined at the hip, per se. Basically the answer I got was that they weren't going to do threading at all until they could do it _right_ per the RFC's and whatnot.
That said, mutt has IMAP support, and has long supported threading. Guess this kind of backhandedly asserts that mutt (and other clients) may not implement threading 100% correctly, but then, as a user, I normally don't concern myself w/ that, since I'm not really qualified. That's what developers are for http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

I use mutt over IMAP, and it's quite good. And it's actually Free Software, unlike Pine.
