A friend told me Slack is falling behind? Is slack the distro i should be using to setup my mail server and firewall?

Well, if it's any indication the last stable release came out just over a year ago...

I've never used it though, so I can't really comment.

hmm, wasn't 8.0 released about 7 months ago? Maybe 8.0 isn't considered a stable release.

Ahh, you're right. I checked Distrowatch and it said 7/1/01, but I was glancing at it and thought it said 1/1/01. My mistake!

No. It is running behind in simplicity but that is not what it is striving for. For a mail server and firewall slack would be the best choice......if you are framilier with linux. If you are just starting out it may not be the best choice.

Yes slack 8 did come out 7 months ago. I think that they came out with an optional update a few months ago kde 2.2.2 and openSSH 3.0.1p1.

It is quite stable and secure, especially for a server platform. The Slack team does not release packages unless they've been throughly tested. This means you get stable software, but also means that you may not get the latest features of a software.
