Mail me please with the damn solution??? I am really very very new to linux and want it for use on the net initially. MS is so naff! I have configured sound but it wont admit the existence of my modem. It is a Conexant v-90 56k voice modem but it is not in the list on config wizard. I have corel linux installed. I also have downloaded and crossed into linux, the new test10 kernel but dont know where to put it (Clean answers only please!!). Help?

Is your modem a PCI modem? If so, it might be a WinModem, unsupported by linux. Check to be sure that this isn't the case before you pull your hair out trying to get it to work.

Could be a dreaded WINMODEM http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/eek.gif
Is it External or Internal? If it is internal is it PCI or ISA? If it is ISA is it PnP or does it have jumpers?
Linux will not recognize most internal PCI modems. They are controllerless modems and need software to run. Linux needs a modem with the controller built into the modem. All external modems have a controller and as do most ISA modems.
Hope this helps.

Thanks - it is a pci internal modem and it is beginning to look like I have had it!! It is a PnP yes. Any suggestions on the kernel issue?

I don't use the -test10 kernel. Its still in the development stages, so there may be a few rough spots. If you just started using linux, I would reccomend you not install a development kernel. It might make things easier on you.

I've managed to get winmodems to work under linux... but not this chipset. I'm afraid there is absolutely no way for this modem at this moment in time to work under linux. Sorry.

I have deleted Linux from my system but had a problem getting rid of the dual boot screen pre-windows. A big thank you to Durango for the fdisk /mbr tip - it really worked. Sorry my visit was so short in Linux, it is not yet user friendly enough for me and has severe limitations but an excellent idea nonetheless. I hope it grows and grows until Bill statrs frowning with anger!!
