How do I control where packages are installed?

I'm somewhat new to Linux ( a recent convert from Windoze), and I don't understand how to make packages install to a certain hardrive.
I have an old system that I put mandrake 7.2 on, it has two harddrives in it. the main one is 1.2 gig (dont laugh) and the second one is about 500 meg(completely empty).
what do i do to install stuff on the second drive? :confused:

You don't usually. You should use your second drive as a /home directory.

You could try --prefix <dir>
