Modem troubles

Well, I'm trying to connect to the internet through kppp in Mandrake 8.0. I get the message that tells me my modem is busy. I've gone to Mandrake's site for help. I've gone to linmodem.org. I can't find anything that seems to help. What do I have to do to get online? I'm running linux on a Dell with a Conexant v.90 modem (vendor id = 14f1, device id = 1066). Thanks for any help. :confused:

I hope this helps you. I had the same problem, just different modem. What I ended up having to do is, using jumpers on the board, change it from PnP to legacy, thus forcing the Com port and IRQ. If your modem has this option then you can try that. If it does not then I cannot help. Sorry.

I figured out that it had something to do with the PnP part when I was messing with my sound card. I use Slackware and it does not do anything automatically like Mandrake does. My modem worded fine until I used a PnP utility to set up my sound card. Once the PnP utility was running, my ppp daemons all gave me a Modem Busy error.

Thanks for the tip, but I have no jumpers on my modem. I guess I'll need to figure something else out.

Did you try to restart, the utility might have probed to com port and not let go after it was done. Therefore the drivers cannot reach the modem.

Do you mean restart Linux? How would I keep it from probing the COM port my modem is on?

Does it probe on every boot?

I would assume so, since I can't use the modem. So when Linux probes the port, it doesn't release it for use????

When I issue cat /proc/pci, Linux lists the modem. How do I tell Linux to use it?
