I installed windows 2000 professional on a 7 GB drive and then installed mandrake and went through the partition walk through and gave half of the drive to mandrake. It was only the third time I ever reformatted and installed an OS and the first time for Linux. It was a piece of cake. But, there is always a but. My video card does not seem to be working, everything is huge 600X400 or something like that. I know the card works because when I boot into windows everything is fine. I put KDE on for my desktop manager for linux. Is this a good one? Is it the best for a newbie? I thought to myself "self go to the desktop right click then click properties go to the settings tab and change the screen resolution" then I woke up and I was not in windows. I did go to boot config and tried to change the resolution, no dice. When I boot up for the first time a screen says "to change resolution hit enter or bla bla bla", so I hit enter and type in the number of the one I want "6" which is 800X600 for starters, no dice. So the question is "Is this card supported by Linux" It is a creative labs model # ct6610 Graphics Blaster Exxtreme . I went to a Linux "Graphic Card Compatibility List" at http://moon.hanya-n.org/comp/alpha/hct/graphics.html and get this
[ NEW ]
Creative Labs, Inc.,
Graphics Blaster Exxtreme PCI
(CT6610)
1024x768,1280x1024,1600x1280,8bit,16bit & 24bit, except 1600x1280/24bit. GENERIC kernel can configure the system successfully.

I don't exactly know if I can go to device manager in Linux and hit update driver or just brows to it. I am having a difficult time getting to know where everything is and how to fix things because the screen is too small for the res and I can't even see all my options. I could use a little direction at this point if you can give me some. Thanx

Hi, try this. Go into Mandrake Control Centre - should be an icon on your desktop. Choose - Hardware - Display. You should be able to choose colour depth and resolution here. It will ask if you want to test new configuration, and if it's OK you will see a penguin screen with an OK and NO box. Click OK when you are happy with the resolution, exit the control centre, logout, then choose Restart X-Server to see the changes. ( You must be root to do all this ).
By the way, I think KDE is a good window manager to start with.

I am extremely green at Linux no doubt. But I already tried that and no dice. When I boot up into Linux a message pops up that says "the code you have selected is invalid press <enter> to chose another" or something like that. Then it has a list 1-6 of what looks like resolutions, so I pick one and it boots up showing me code the whole time instead of a nice graphic screen. When it boots up it looks like the old ATARI video game from 20 years ago. I go to control --> log in as root --> Hardware --> display the half screen on the right says "Loading" and a pretty bar twirls like a candy cane and then BLANK nothing on the right. So I think I'm kinda smart so I go to bootconfig or something like that and find a dropdown list then I hit configure and advanced and change the list dropdown to 12X7 or whatever and then reboot, NOTHING. So I go to hardware --> video and click the + sign to drop down my choices. 3Dlabs primedia 2 (generic) primedia II bla bla. So I click on that to see if I have any options and nothing again. Any ideas
