How do you compile something into the kernal? Is it just installing it or do you have to actually mess with the kernal itself?

Best to have a read of the NHF's that explain the process. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/compiling/index.html Also the documentation at www.kernel.org (http://www.kernel.org) where you can also d/l the latest kernel source.
