Okay, I've been looking for awhile, but I can't seem to find anything about this. I am running Mandrake 8 on my Compaq Presario 17XL360 notebook. 192M/10Gig, 600Mhz P3. 2 USB ports, one each video, s-video, and parallel, and a PC Card slot. Scince I don't have a serial port, and the built in modem is a winmodem, can I run a 3com/USR model 5686-03 external modem through the parallel port?

The modem is borrowed from a friend who is graced with DSL. If I can get this to work, I'll just keep it, but if not, I can swing a new modem (PC Card? And if so, any suggetions?).

You should be able to.

Do you have a cable that connects the external modem to the parallel port?
www.linuxdoc.org (http://www.linuxdoc.org) may have how-to's on different modems, parallel port usage and others that may help.

Worth a try I guess and the price is right.

I didn't find much at Google for a search on 3com/USR 5686-03 (http://www.google.com/linux?site=search&restrict=linux&hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=off&q=3com%2FUSR+5686-03&btnG=Google+Search).

Thanks!

I'm checking linuxdoc.com right now. It looks like a page I need to bookmark!
