Importing ttf fonts

I'm in Slackware 8, and I tryed using the RedHat method of doing this... but it doesn't work because the ttmkfdir command isn't there. CAn anyone help? :p

i downloaded it from freshmeat.net but it says it requires freetype-1.1 and i cant fidn that anywhere just freetype 2 etc
