If you're looking for a text-base dialer, check out 'wvdial' http://freshmeat.net

I've had Caldera and Redhat and Mandrake (Yeah, I know, the're all Redhat) and the only way I've ever been able to dial in to any computer has been by setting up the correct values for ppp0 in linuxconf. Then connecting with it or using "ifup ppp0" from the console (or a script).

I did spend a lot of time trying to get kppp and gnomeppp to work. then I stopped.

I've only experience with script based authentication. Maybe they do work with chap, etc.

i managed to get it working but only if i added noauth to the script in options

/etc/ppp/options
edit it
include noauth in it
hash out auth if you see it

should be fine
wrt initial probs make sure your modem is setup properly in the setup section.
