I had similar problems when installing SuSE 7.0 (grey screen and almost completly locked up during X11 setup, the only thing I could do was CTRL+ALT+DEL, which forced unmount and reboot!).

WARNING: I can only suggest things that I did as the programs I used as they might not have been shipped with your dist, I hope the following helps.

The way I got around the grey screening was to run sax, sax2 and then isax (all of which configure the graphical options for X). Then I found I could only run initx as root (startx wouldn't run at all since no X server was running). The wasy this was solved was an option in YaST which allowed me to change from ASCII login to Graphical. This solved my problems and I could continue setting up my box.

Hope any of this helps

I'm pretty sure that Mandrake 8 doesn't have any version of sax installed. (I did a find as root and it only found one thing which is XML related, not X configuration related)

On the other hand, they have a nifty X configuration tool called XFdrake which makes configuring X a snap. (The menus on it are very similar to the ones from the graphical install) Unfortunately, I tried various settings for X using XFdrake and none of them worked getting X to start for my user account, while X seemed to work fine from my root account for almost every configuration I used.

Following the advice of someone else on this forum, I put 'startkde' into an .xinitrc file and that helped a tad. Instead of a gray screen, I now get the blue background for KDE, but it still stalls there. I don't want to set up other stuff until I know that I can get KDE working on this box, so if someone has some insight into this, I think it would be very useful for me and ssfusion :)

P.S. ssfusion: can you successfully run startx as root? If you can, then we most likely have the same problem :)
