Hi all!
I'm using Suse7.0 Prof. My problem is that the size of my /home partition is too small.
I got following partitions on my hd.
hda4: 973MB /usr/local
hda5: 486MB /home
hda6: 372MB /root
hda7: 5713MB /

Is it possible to resize the hd, so that /home gets about 500MB from / so that /home is 1GB, but without losing any data?
If yes, how?

tnx in advance

You could try GNU Parted (available at freshmeat.net) as it's supposed to have the same functionality as Partition Magic.

I always create my ext2 and swap partitions with Partition Magic although I've never tried to resize an active Linux partition. You would most likely be safer using Parted than PM.

I personally have not used Parted, but I have used Partition Magic 6.0 under Windows to change the size linux partitions and it worked fine.

I also think PQmagic is a powerful tool for partition management and I always use 6.0 for DOS (because 6.0 for Windows sometimes canot activate what I want). It is reliable and I really like it. But one day after I used it to resize my Linux partition something strange happened: the Linux partition could not be recognized by PQmagic! I entered Linux and use 'fdisk' command and found that the type of my Linux partition was changed from 83 (Linux native) to 93 (Amoeba). I really have no idea about how can it happen. And what is a Amoeba partition? I know nothing about it.

Just use MS fdisk. Turn em all into fat32 partitions. WINDOWS RULES(#&$(&#$(*&#(*&#$(*&#$ :)

To resize an ext2 partition, you need to resize the filesystem first, then resize the partition (no, they aren't the same thing). You need to have a program rearrange the inodes and superblocks, then resize the partition. PQMagic 6.0 might have that functionality, all I have is 5.0, and I have never used parted. No advice here.

I used PQ5 to resize ext2 partitions, but it blew out lilo. I booted with a floppy, and ran lilo, reboot and all was well

just my 2cents worth, your results may vary

A good partition and OS manager that I have used is System Commander. Unfortuanately it costs money. Try Freshmeat.net if you wanna save some money.
