Kernel 2.4.7 - vesa hires textmodes support

Hi... recently while trying to install nVidia drivers i found i had to recompile my kernel (The headers in Slack 8 are messed up, this is the only way i would know the kernel module was being built with the right headers). This was my first time... and it went okay.
My only problem was, that using my new kernel, specifying vga=<number> in lilo.conf or at the lilo prompt doesn't work anymore. I selected this option in menuconfig - and it *is* there because i hear my monitor change screen mode... then, i just got a blank black screen. The computer hasn't hung, because i could wait for it to finish booting then press ctrl-alt-del

I thought maybe it was the specific kernel i was using... so i decided i might as well upgrade to 2.4.7... well, i get the exact same problem while doing that, too :(

I mean... the original problem is solved, my nVidia GL works fine... I just want my nice 1024x768 console back!

BTW. this *did* work in the precompiled 2.4.5 kernel that slack installed in the first place - so it's not my video card.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

If i have to change my kernel config and recompile, can someone tell me how i load my config that i used last time so i don't have to select everything again? Then i can just change the relevant bits...

I sorta have the same problem as I'm trying to get the latest kernel to boot using the vesa gui boot screens instead of the standard console. The default 2.4.2 kernel works as expected, but just about anything I select in the new kernel does not work.

Seems as though your just trying to get a screen that shows the bootup messages while I'm trying to get the same but with a gui bootup.

All the new kernels I build and boot just gets me a blank bootup screen (as yours) and then only appears when the desktop starts.

For yours, just delete vga= from you bootloader config ( if lilo, then rerun /sbin/lilo ) for the new kernel and you should see the bootup messages.

The configuration file you just created will be in /usr/src/<new_kernel>/.config

I have a script to do all my compiling and also will backup the newest .config to another directory when the compile process has completed successfully.

When you run 'make xconfig', then just select 'load configuration' and then click in the box and type the path and filename to the previous config file.

But yeah... i already corrected my vga line to just do the standard vga text mode...
But i *want* my vesa modes damnit! grr...
Anyone know how to solve this? Having a screen that low res is really starting to annoy me... i do a lot of stuff on the console.

Have you tried vga=785 in lilo.conf and you're remembering to rerun /sbin/lilo after each change.

There are other options besides 785 though I can't remember them right now.

During the kernel configuration, have you selected all that's necessary for vesa?

I'm still working on getting the gui boot to work with the new kernel. Why won't the damn thing work as the original kernel does? At least I can see the boot messages now by removing vga=274 for the new kernel. I'll just keep trying until it works.

It doesn't work regardless of the screen mode you specify... only the default VGA mode works.

I searched and searched through menuconfig and couldn't find anything to change.

However, i was fiddling around and when i do vga=ask, ask for a list, and then type one of the modes it *does* switch and is viewable... however - it's ugly and most of the modes are missing, also there is no little Tux sitting in the corner. So... i am assuming there is something wrong with the VESA framebuffer thingie?
I don't really know the specifics of this to be honest... I mean, i understand how the framebuffer works and everything, i'm just not sure how it fits into the kernel etc...
i looked through the docs in Documentation/fb/ and i can't find anything about 'installing' it.
It says for it to work i need to 'compile in vgacon (for text mode) and vesafb (for graphics mode)'.
How do i 'compile in vesafb'? There is no option for that in menuconfig...

So i am guessing that the section in the kernel config about video mode selection is just the code in the kernel to fiddle with the BIOS and change the mode... but there isn't actually support for the framebuffer in there.
So... where is it? How do i turn it on?

I don't really know what i am talking about here... lol. I am just guessing...
But if when the video mode changes, console output starts being written to the framebuffer and everything is working perfectly (checked the logs, no errors), EXCEPT i get a blank screen - surely this just means the fb is being written to okay, but just isn't being dumped to the screen?

Bleh..... i don't know what to do about this.

I don't even *have* the frame buffer support section in my config file! Where is the section in menuconfig to enable this?
If not..... i guess pasting that into my kernel config and then changing requrired options should work?

It isn't... the only two options are the vga console and video mode selection... both of which i say Y to...

I have the standard 2.4.7 kernel source from kernel.org... so why should the config options be different?

Mine is the 3rd option under Console Drivers and has always been there for the 2.4.6, 7 and 8 kernel.

Maybe something else needs to be enabled for the option to appear.

all it needs is to enable vga=791 in lilo.conf that will give VESA 1024x768x16bit mode...i could use fb for my voodoo3 but it's not that great by this way i get the mode(s) i want.Hope this helps.
