I installed Stormix with Gnome or KDE. When I select it from the LILO boot menu it scrolls through all the init crap and last thing it says is Starting gdm then the screen goes black. This happens wether Gnome is installed or not. This is the 5th distro I've tried, third Debian based and I want to know WTH is up with this. I tried booting in "text" mode and it came up with the same thing.

It happens then you boot into single user (linux single at the LILO prompt)?. Whats the last line you see?

I boot from Lilo into Stormix, it goes through all the init crap, and the last READABLE line is: Starting GNOME Display Manager. I think the next line or two is Welcome Epyon (comp name) and thankyou for chosing Stormix. Then it goes to a black screen. alt-ctrl-del lets me reboot but it looks dead. I searched Storm's site with no success. :/

Try typing "linux single" when the lilo prompt comes up before trying the below.

---
Get a couple of linux bootdisks from here (ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/mirrors/slackware/slackware-8.0/bootdsks.144/bare.i) and here (ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/mirrors/slackware/slackware-8.0/rootdsks/color.gz).
The first is the boot disk image and the second is a root disk image. rawwrite them in windows or dd them in linux.

do:
mount your / partition.

grep initdefault /etc/inittab (gets you your default runlevel.)

go to that runlevel (look around in etc for rc*runlevel )

remove the gdm file that begins with S.

Let me know how it went. That should work providing you have gettys set up in inittab.. i think :) I don't use any display manager, im making this up as I go along

There is no prompt at LILO as it's a grapical menu and only has Linux and Windows listed. Storm obviously is an older distro but so is Mandrake 7.2 and I had the latter working fine out of the ISO. On a text boot or to a graphical boot manager.

You pick which os to run through a graphical menu? Howzat? Whats it called? I don't believe you. :)

It sounds like X simply isnt configured properly.

When you see the letters LILO, type:
linux 1

You don't select it. Just type it.

That's my point. There's nowhere to type. It's a graphical boot loader. I never see the letters LILO, just the pretty pic of Storm Linux, a penguin, and Linux then Windows. I've reinstalled this damn thing a few times as well.

When the graphical boot loader screen comes up, try pressing SHIFT or TAB or F1 and see if you get a lilo boot prompt. No guarantees.

Okay, will do.
